Ingredients

1 c. butter or margarine softened
1 ¾ c. sugar
1 ½ tsp. vanilla
4 eggs beaten
3 c. flour
1 ½ tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
1 can cherry pie filling
Powdered sugar
Almond extract
Milk

Directions

Cream butter and sugar. Add vanilla and eggs. Add flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix together. It will be quite sticky. Grease a sheet cake pan. Spread a little over half the batter on the sheet cake pan. It will be quite thin on the pan. Spread the cherry pie filling over the batter. Take the rest of the batter and take little pieces (about walnut size or so) and put some flour on it and with your hands spread it quite thin on the counter and drape over cherries. It will appear messy but as it cooks it looks just fine. Bake at 350 degrees for 35–40 minutes or until light brown. Make a runny frosting of powdered sugar, milk, and almond extract and drizzle all over the cherry bars when hot. It is kind of like a Danish dessert.
