4 c. water
½ lb. raw split peas
2 carrots cut up
1/3 c. chopped onion
1–2 ham hocks or ham pieces
1 bay leaf
½ tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
Put all ingredients into a pan and bring to boil. Cover & turn down to simmer and cook until soft and mushy. About 1 hour. You may need to add more water if necessary.
